Hi Marcus,

there is no direct relation to Riverbank. Well, the correct story is, that I took over a defunct
graphical debugger, which was eric version 2.x. This happened in 2002. At this time I wanted to
learn Python and Qt and this had both. Learning by doing is often a good way to go and I got it
working with relatively minor fixes. As Phil ported the Scintilla editor library to Qt I suggested to
develop eric into a full blown development environment. He was happy and I did it. Today there
is nearly no code left over from these days. That is the short story of eric. If you are wondering,
why it was called 'eric', just think, why the standard Python IDE was called 'idle' and why
Python was called Python (hint: it is not the snake).

PyQt (and QScintilla) is the foundation eric is built upon.

The target audience is every developer who wants to program with Python (2 or 3) and needs an
IDE. That is from noobies up to professionals.

Regards,
Detlev
