Understood.  Would calling os.path.expanduser() for paths be too 
fragile?  I can see cases where someone has a literal ~ in a path 
causing a problem, but I'd guess the case where someone types in a ~ 
intending to mean their home directory would be more common.

Actually, fairly often, though not necessarily *my* repository.  I wind 
up checking out from SourceForge or other Open-Source projects at least 
a couple of times a month, but it's during setup that not having the 
memory becomes an annoyance.  We (the company) have... dozens of 
projects (on top of the 30 or so Open Source projects for which I have 
local build trees and my own 10 or so projects).  Makes for a tedious 
bit of work setting up a work environment.
